Im Deutschen existieren 8 Grundvokale (inklusive der Umlaute). Jeder Vokal wird in eine lange, gespannte und eine kurze, ungespannte Variante unterschieden. Die Vokallänge ist ausschlaggebend für die Wortbedeutung (z. B. Ofen vs. offen).

There are 8 basic vowels in German (including the umlauts). Each vowel is distinguished by a long, tense variant and a short, lax variant. Vowel length is crucial for the meaning of a word (e.g., *Ofen* vs. *offen*).

Diphthonge sind Doppelvokale. Man gleitet beim Sprechen von einem Vokal zum nächsten. Das Deutsche hat drei wichtige Doppelvokale. Sie werden immer lang gesprochen.

Diphthongs are double vowels. When speaking, you glide from one vowel to the next. German has three important double vowels. They are always pronounced as long sounds.

Les diphtongues sont des voyelles doubles. À l’oral, on passe d’une voyelle à l’autre en glissant. L’allemand compte trois diphtongues importantes. Elles se prononcent toujours longuement.
